While our city is still a great destination for visitors, one and a half years post Katrina, this is where our local community stands:

Just over 200 people have received money to rebuild form the state government's "Road Home" program. (Yes, that's the billions of dollars that the Federal Government sent to help) Where's the money?

Although this map of FEMA applications has been out for a while now, I just wanted to put it here to save a piece of hurricane memorabilia. This map, published originally by the New Orleans Times Picayune Newspaper, shows how far New Orleans residents were dispersed throughout the country during the storm's evacuation. The data was collected from FEMA applications from the displaced residents across the country.

The Times Picayune and NOLA.com today published a great pictorial timeline of the Hurricane Katrina flooding of the City of New Orleans.

I'm not even going to comment on Mayor Ray Nagin's "Chocolate City" comments. I think I'll take the high road.

Frank Davis quote of the day while making soup on WWL this morning:

Naturally New Orleans.

Maybe this is the video footage of New Orleans they should have showed during Monday Night Football:

Monday Night Football

I'm glad Madden pointed out the fact last night that our team is working out in a tent in San Antonio when we have a perfectly good practice facility here in New Orleans. I'm glad they recognized some of the challenges the team faces.

It's really unfortunate however, that they showed video of untouched parts of the French Quarter during their broadcast - when most of our city is uninhabitable the destruction is so bad. They need to show people the water line on every house and the piles of storm debris on every street. They should have mentioned the fact that the REAL reason that no one wants to come back to New Orleans is the fact that we can't get our government to commit to a category 5 levee system.

11/17/2005 Hurricane Katrina : New Orleans

I just watched the Brian Williams Dateline special on hurricane Katrina, and it brought back some really bad memories. The site of those people without food and water in the streets of New Orleans, the city I love, just brought tears to my eyes. I'm so embarrassed that I live in a country where that happened, and it's because of the bureaucratic garbage that I've hated my whole life. It's the fact that we need an act of congress to close the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet that engineers have been warning us about since it was dug. It's the fact that the head of FEMA was out eating dinner in Baton Rouge when those people were starving on the streets of New Orleans. That man should be ashamed of himself for blaming the governor of the state and mayor of New Orleans.

10/18/2005 Hurricane Katrina : New Orleans

Just for the record, I do not support the idea of expanding land based casinos in order to help fund the reconstruction of the city of New Orleans. I think we need to be more creative and socially responsible than that. I'm kind of surprised that Mayor Nagin came up with that idea. Or did he?

Good News about our family business so far: Snee Chemical Company escaped with minimal damage.

There are people breaking into stores stealing anything they can walk away with in our city and where's the National Guard? I think if we told Bush there were weapons of mass destruction in the city, he'd get help down here a little faster.

7/27/2005 New Orleans Real Estate Update

We actually found a nice house 5 minutes from Uptown New Orleans, but still in (much safer) Jefferson Parish.

Map Here

We got a great deal too. It's an older house, and needs some renovation, but we paid around $85 / sq. ft. in a neighborhood where houses are selling at $110 / sq. ft.>>>

Well I have been looking for my first house lately, and I must say - the prices in the City of New Orleans are unbelievable! So it looks like I'm headed for suburbia. Even there the prices are a little high, but at least I wouldn't have crack dealers a block away.

1/03/2005 New Orleans | Blanco and The Saints

Kathleen Blanco! You're a great Governor. Please don't lose the Saints! If New Orleans loses the Saints it will be a great loss, not only financially, but also culturally. The New Orleans Saints are so much a part of our culture here. I know they're not the best team in the NFL, but they're OUR team and we love them. Once they're gone it will be near impossible to get them back.

It snowed for the first time on Christmas day in 50 years here in the big easy. Wouldn't you know I'd be in Dallas, TX on such an occasion.

My Neighborhood Laundromat

You know, I really love my city, and I hate to paint a bad picture of it. But at the same time, I have to admit to the fact that this is my neighborhood Laundromat. This is where I go to get my dry cleaning done.

I'm the only white guy that has set foot in this place in 20 years. Never a dull moment goes by at this place. I have witnessed crack deals, child abuse, and just last week I got harassed, yelled at, and called a racist because I wouldn't give some drunk guy my $70 Eddie Bauer dress shirt. And the Chinese lady that runs this place is a tough cookie. Man, NOBODY messes with her; and if you DO, she gives people this mean nasty face that sends them running for help.

New Orleans Judges

Louisiana is something else. Let me tell you. I just sat through a judicial hearing in which the judge sat back with her eyes closed throughout almost the entire process. W O W. What a surprise. So goes another day in Louisiana justice.

Traffic uptown sucks right now. If they build a new stadium at the foot of the GNO bridge it will be a traffic NIGHTMARE. Why are people even talking about this?

The Saints can't support it!

New Orleans is the Greatest City

What other cities have places like Igor's where you can do laundry and drink beer and play pool all in the same place?
