4/8/2007 Search Engine Optimization

I now have a new blog I started which does a much better job of representing the work I have been doing for the last couple of years. I have really enjoyed posting on Hartwell.tv, but for some reason the format hasn't lent itself well to to the "search engines" and "web design" sections. I'm not sure why, but my creative flow never got established here. The fishing section did really well, until I started nolaspearfishing.com and started putting all of my blog posts there. The New Orleans Saints section is doing great, and I plan on continuing that, maybe even one day moving it to a blog of its own.

I'm really excited about the new blog I started though, and I hope you'll take the time to check it out if you're at all interested in internet marketing. New Orleans Internet Marketing is going to be a wealth of resources for people new to internet marketing, sem, and seo. Regular Harwtell.tv visitors will surely recognize the familiar image at the top - where is it from? There may be a contest soon to see who can find out...

Wow, I think I just caught a Google PageRank update as it happened. Not that PageRank is the be all and end all anymore - it's just cool to look at really...

The most recent Google PageRank update turned out really well for The FMC Directory. PR7 for the first time!

Google update "Jagger" is well under way, and things look good in the mental health / counseling SERP's I watch. The American Counseling Association website is #1 for counseling finally - as it should be. PageRank has updated as well, but all of my sites stayed the same for the most part. inlayout.net went up to a PR6.

Also interesting to note: Webmasterworld has been down for the past 24 hours, one of the most popular webmaster forums...

Google's been doing some strange stuff with The FMC Directory again lately. It's #1 for marriage counseling, but many of the interior pages are barely ranking at all. I'm going to look into it further.

Good News in Google world. The FMC Directory is back in the search results as strong as ever, and I think I found the cause for the sudden dip in rankings over the past 2 mos. It may have had little to nothing to do with update "Bourbon" after all.

About 4 or 5 mos. ago I added Canadian Provinces to the directory, but didn't finish adding free listings for all of the provinces. I got sidetracked by some other projects and made the mistake of leaving the empty pages up on the web with no original content. The only difference in each page was the geographical location. I also linked to the pages with no content.

About 10 days ago, I realized my mistake when I went to add some more free listings to the Canadian Provinces. I had unwittingly spammed Google by leaving empty directory pages up on the web! I left the pages up that had original content, and I removed the links that pointed to the empty pages. Now we're back in.

Yahoo! update!

Google Update! Not so good for me, so far The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory got knocked down a notch or two...hopefully it's not over though.

Finally I see the light at the end of the tunnel...MSN is getting better. I see some good changes in SERP's for the areas I watch last few days. Traffic is really rolling now that I have all of "The Big Three" on board!

Still waiting on the next PageRank update.

Google News: Some SEO's got a hand on Google's patent application for ranking websites based on historical data, and it is very interesting. It seems that Google may be using timeline data associated with link building and as well as domain name registration periods and more. This is really good stuff, but I don't want to comment on it more until I have read the whole document. I already did a 10 year registration on The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory's domain name. How kneejerk is that? I also finally got a static IP address.

4/3/2005 Search Engine Optimization Blog Update

Yahoo! Big update last few days, and my sites are J A M M I N G > The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory is now #1 for the keyword "counseling" on Yahoo! - that's right...one word out of 32,800,000 web pages. This site is doing great and it's really building a lot of natural links now since it is becoming an authority site. I am loving life right now.

Google Backlink Update! PageRank must be right around the corner!

Postings about a recent MSN update but no noticeable differences in the results I follow. They seem much the same to me, and not that great overall.

Of more consequence is the coolest thing I've seen out of Google Labs to date: Google Maps

This is the coolest map tool on the net. It loads extremely fast, has incredible detail, and is easy to read. You can also move it around with your mouse cursor with no delay. Good Job Google.

Watching SERP's has gotten boring lately. It used to be exciting waiting for the Google Dance, but nowadays - part of me misses the drastic PR updates followed by SERP changes, but then again, that's probably the unhealthy part of me that seeks drama and excitement. Stability is a good thing. Especially when your sites are jamming with traffic.

1/19/2005 Search Engine Update

Microsoft Search Launches
No longer just a beta version, Microsoft started using their own search results over the past few days, replacing Yahoo! serp's that they've been using for some time now.

What does this mean for us SEO's? One more thing to worry about. If Microsoft starts serving poor results (as they have in some areas), then well optimized sites will lose traffic. I'm ok with that when authority sites are the ones at the top. The problem with some of the Microsoft serp's is that some of the top sites resemble link farms.

What do we do? Try to find out how to optimize for MSN?
No. Sit back and wait for MSN to get it right. If Microsoft Windows OS can be used as a yardstick - this could take some time. I think it should have stayed in beta a little longer. Some MSN could migrate over to Yahoo and Google eventually, but I doubt it will have much impact. MSN users are like cattle being herded into Microsoft's portal because they don't know any other possibility exists.

PageRank Update!
Finally another PageRank Update! All my sites did well in this update. Backlinks were updated as well, though Google's backlink reporting is all but meaningless these days. My only observations of late have been that PageRank doesn't seem as big of a factor as it once was. Nonetheless, I still like its overall useage.

12/26/2004 Search Engine Update

Yahoo!
Yahoo Updated about a week ago, and for the first time yours truly was the first to spot the changes and start a thread on Webmasterworld. The thread made it to the first page of the site and has had many responses. So far I like the update. My sites are doing great! Bridge House made it to page #2 for "charitable donations" (finally!) and The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory bounced up to the first page for a while for "counseling." Wow! Very very good so far. I think my text link ad investment is largely responsible for that.

Google
I'm not so happy with the Goo's recent changes. Some spammy website with over-optimized pages is now beating me in the rankings. I'm hoping it's just temporary. The site looks typical of the type of short term spammy sites that come and go on Google, so I'm not going to make any changes to my site to compete with it. Although I may do a few test pages in case the update sticks. It's only local searches that I'm getting beat on, but they do bring in a large amount of traffic cumulatively. Ouch! Christmas time traffic sucks for "marriage counseling."

Google Scholar

"Google Scholar enables you to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web."
- from Google Website

I tried out a few searches and ran across some sites where the links took me to articles I needed password access to. As with everything else in life, it's not perfected yet; but I think they're headed in the right direction. Good job Google.

Does this Google "sandbox" really exist, or is it just the normal lag that always existed for competitive keywords?

Are these websites that have been "sandboxed" for nine months (!) really in a "sandbox" at all.

I have a feeling something else may be going on.

Yahoo returns to normal...I'll get over the slow weekend. Thank God.

Hopelessness sets in...

What's going on with Yahoo! SERP's? My site's been steadily moving up to #1 for extremely hard to target keywords and yesterday it drops down to #8 for the main one!

To top it off, Microsoft debuts the beta version of their new engine this week and the SERP's are awful. http://beta.search.msn.com/ They've got brand new sites with no backlinks ranking higher than national organizations that have been around for years in the Counseling profession.

I've been through this so many times before ... what if it all works out?

Like Rainman obsessed over his underwear, I obsess over search engine results. I watch them over, and over, and over, and over.
